From sketch to online

I don´t know how to make a proper drawing. I sew but very basic repairings. I know how much fabric I need for making a pattern, but I never dare to buy a piece of material to be left on my desk under another purpose. And yet, I admire dressmakers and would love to make one on my own.

I´ve just discover BYCO. It´s amazing what we can do online. This process is quite similar to MOO business cards but in clothing (taking into account that is a completely different product and the complexity involved, of course). You submitt your design and they produce. Have you ever heard about it?. I´m  frustrated when it comes to the idea of “do it myself stuff”,  but I think I´m going to try it. We´ll see if this idea works. It seems easy:

You upload your design, access the fabrics library where you can choose material, colour… and then get real time pricing. And that´s it.

Real designers will be terrified of this online business. You don´t touch the fabric and have a few options. But just for fun, or just because you want a custom piece or have an idea in mind and don´t have time to search for suppliers or to get price for just one production, which raise the final price.

BYCO was launched last spring,  and they say their goal is to become a place where many different designs can become a reality.

The BYCO online team also select the most commercial products they manufacture, and sell them on the site. Designers get 20% of total sales and also retain the copyright. The majority of pieces run between 100 and 300 dollars.

Here you are some of the designs. In truth they are not great for such a price. But that depends on your creativity. Just try it.
